The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell
Alfred the Great I
Ever wondered who Alfred the Great was? How did he save Britan from the Danes? Well then this is the book for you. It details the life of Uthred who at a very young age sees both his father and brother die and is taken prisoner by a Danish Earl, Ragnar. Over the years Uthred loves Ragnar like a father and calls himself a Dane. But when he finds himself in a procarious situation Uthred has to decide where his alligances lie.

Like all of Cornwell's other great Historical Fiction works it is brilliant. Great characters, excellent storyline whilst managing to 'teach' the reader as they are reading. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one to see where Uthred's path leads him.
